Attic insulation can dramatically reduce energy costs. Proper insulation will keep your home cooler in summer and warmer in winter, cutting your cost to heat and cool your home.
When considering ways to improve a home’s energy-efficient, most people don’t consider attic ventilation. But they should! Good attic ventilation will keep hot air from building up in your attic. Hot air in your attic in summer can push down into living spaces causing you to run your air conditioner more.
In winter, a hot attic can cause premature damage to your roof, shingles, and gutters. During snow season, the snow that sits atop a hot roof will melt. The water then runs down the roof deck to the eave and gutters where it freezes. Eventually, gutters fill and the ice pushes up underneath nearby shingles, causing ice dams. Ice dams can cause significant damage to your home structure. Proper ventilation will keep attic temperatures low in winter reducing snowmelt and minimizing the chance of ice dams.
