ATTIC MOLD IS DUE TO MOISTURE
Attic mold is often the result of moisture that builds up in the attic. Moisture from living spaces below will rise to the attic. If the attic is not properly ventilated the moisture collects on attic surfaces creating an ideal environment for mold growth.
Mold spores are commonly found in the environment including household dusts. Mold growth occurs when spores are exposed to moisture, fuel, and consistent temperatures. Even the smallest amount of organic material can fuel mold growth.
MOLD SPORES CAN IMPACT INDOOR AIR QUALITY
Mold spores can impact indoor air quality and be particularly challenging for occupants with allergies, asthma, auto-immune diseases, or other health issues. Some species of mold can be hazardous to all occupants.
DANGEROUS ATTIC MOLD IS HARD TO IDENTIFY
There are thousands of known mold species. It is impossible to identify most mold species by the naked eye. Precise identification of mold is typically done by a certified laboratory.
ATTIC MOLD DAMAGE
Attic mold can also lead to significant damage. As mold spreads through your attic, wooden structures that support your roof can begin to deteriorate. The combination of moisture and mold breakdown the fibers in the wood making them less sturdy. Over time, this can impact the stability of your roof, lead to cracked and warped roof tiles and other problems.
Moisture and Mold in your attic can also spoil your attic insulation. When insulation is wet it lacks the ability to properly insulate your attic.
FINDING THE MOISTURE IS KEY
It is important to first identify the source of moisture. There are a number of ways moisture buildup can occur in your attic. Improper attic ventilation is the most likely cause. Moisture from showers, baths, cooking, and cleaning activities can rise up from living spaces through unsealed gaps and cracks around outlets, light fixtures, and other spaces.

Moisture buildup can also be due to improperly installed bathroom exhaust fans or dryer exhaust letting out into the attic rather than outdoors.

BEWARE OF DIY REMEDIES
There are a number of DIY remedies on the market that promise to easily address mold problems. Bleach or some combination of bleach and other agents promise to eradicate mold but falls far short of doing so, not to mention the hassle of properly applying these solutions. And it puts you in harm’s way, especially if you suffer from allergies, other breathing disorders, or have an autoimmune disorder.

ATTIC MOLD FOUND IN DUPAGE / COOK COUNTIES
We have seen higher than normal concentrations of attic mold in both Cook and Dupage County. Neighborhoods in Naperville, Palatine, Arlington Heights, Elmhurst, Glen Ellyn, Oakbrook, and Downers Grove have all had higher than normal mold activity this year. While we cannot be certain, it may be due to the excessive amount of rain leading to longer periods with windows and doors being kept closed longer.
