ATTIC INFESTATIONS – VERY COMMON IN THE MIDWEST
We frequently confront attic infestations here in the midwest. Critters looking for shelter in the winter will go to great lengths to get access to your home attic. In the fall, critters turn to the warmth and safety of attic spaces to escape harsh weather and to build a den to breed their young.
Vermin including squirrels, rats, bats, and raccoons gain access to your attic through gaps in your roof, or via soffits or unsecured roof vents. These small creatures can use their sharp teeth and claws to easily tear through wood, metal, and plastic. And they can surprisingly squeeze through very small openings.
DON’T IGNORE ATTIC NOISES!
If you hear noises in your attic, typically at night, you may have an attic infestation. Don’t ignore such noises. Left unaddressed, a few vermin can quickly grow into a pack, multiplying the damage, contamination, and health risk.
Wild critters in your attic can be very dangerous. You should never attempt to remove them yourself. It is best to contact a wildlife removal expert to remove them safely. We have worked with Critter Detectives at 630.916.7678, for over 20 years. They serve the Chicago Metro area and most suburbs.
SIGNS OF ATTIC INFESTATION:
- The sound of scurrying feet overhead
- Unexplained damage to soffits or unprotected roof vents
- An ammonia or urine odor in the attic
- Vermin waste deposits on or in insulation
BEWARE OF WHAT THEY LEAVE BEHIND
These critters represent a health risk and can do significant damage inside and outside of your home. Their attic dens are also a breeding ground for dangerous parasites that can be spread throughout your insulation. They also can carry lice, fleas, and mites. Vermin will always select a latrine location near their den, depositing fecal matter and urine in your attic, often among attic insulation or among storage boxes kept in the attic.
After vermin is removed, your attic will need proper decontamination. We are one of the few companies in the area offering comprehensive, safe, contactless attic decontamination. Professional decontamination ensures contaminates in the attic are not transferred to living spaces and all contaminated material is disposed of safely. Click here to learn more>
PREVENTING ATTIC INFESTATION
Inspect the exterior of your home. Eliminate bushes, tree branches, and patio covers that provide easy access to your roof or soffit. Make sure your roof vents are secure and animal-proofed.
Critters source den space in the fall. Conducting bi-annual inspections (spring and fall) of your attic, vents, and the exterior of your home and minimizing access options can dramatically reduce the likelihood of an infestation.
